Just so we’re clear, I’m not the worst person. I do sometimes participate! I did make him a cowboy costume for his first Halloween. I always laugh when I see these pictures. It’s amazing to me that he was once so small.

Milo’s hair is usually pretty tame, maybe a few fly aways here and there, but that’s about it. The other morning though, he woke up with some seriously radical bedhead.

If I thought I could make his hair do that on purpose, I’d stick him in a plaid shirt, denim jacket and some dirty jeans, make him a bass guitar out of cardboard and VOILA! Milo could go as Tommy Stinson from the Replacements for Halloween. Matt says dressing your kid as the bassist for a seminal-but-never-quite-famous punk band from the 80s is probably a little esoteric for the toddler set. But I feel, as a Brooklyn parent, that this is EXACTLY the kind of pretentious behavior I should be engaging in, you know, to keep the side up and all.

I may have had a change of heart regarding Halloween. We took the kid down to Park Slope today (kid central neighborhood) for some trick/treat spectacles and to watch the Halloween parade. There were, of course, plenty of store-bought plastic costumes, but there were also enough kid-designed homemade costumes to warm even this grumpy old lady’s heart. My favorites were an F train car (the subway that goes through Brooklyn), an old-fashioned robot, and a wrecking ball crane, all made out of cardboard and household items. I didn’t see anything that could measure up to the Sweet-Juniper Robocop costume, but let’s face it, that kid pretty much won 1st prize in the national Halloween costume contest, hands-down. I got a little excited about making some homemade costumes over the next few years, at least until the kid is old enough to beg me for store-bought costumes.

We took our little cowboy over to Deb, Brian and Max’s apt for a little Babies First Halloween photo session.

Oh and also, has there been some kind of Super Mario Bros video game reboot lately? We saw so many Marios, Luigis and assorted side characters that it seemed unusual.
