I just spent the last three days making a fairly detailed spreadsheet of Brooklyn preschools. Sigh. My kid is only 18 months old, and I don’t plan on sending him to school until he’s three, and yet here I am, making spreadsheets. We’re going to our first open house tonight at the Brooklyn Waldorf School. If I have any Brooklyn readers who are interested in this info, send me your email and I’ll share it with you via google docs.
Luckily, most Brooklyn preschools (the kind we can at least sort of maybe afford) don’t really require this much advance planning. I figured, however, that I might be a little busy over next summer and fall with the new baby so maybe it’d be good to get some of the research, tours and open houses done before May.
I was surprised to find out that there are a few schools where the main entry level is the 2 year old program. I was a little taken aback by that. Do 2 year olds really need to be in preschool? Especially at $10,000 a year? I understand if both parents work outside the home and the child would be at a daycare or babysitter’s anyway, but…I don’t know. I feel like Milo will be going off to school full-time soon enough, I’d rather have the extra year with him. Although maybe check back with me next September…I might be ruing the day I didn’t sign him up for some kind of out-of-the-house program a few days a week when I’m balancing a very active toddler and a new baby.

The waldorf school here has a “parent and child” class that’s for 18m -4y. So I guess it’s introducing them to school but you still get to hang. Does your have that/is that something you’re interested in? It’s probably still pricey…

2 is the norm for most preschools here. That’s when the “teachable learning’ starts. Anything before that babies pretty much learn naturally. After 2 you can do a lot with sensory and discovery.
