Matt and I bought Where the Wild Things Are for the boy last month. It’s become one of his favorite books, and he likes to talk to the little Max doll that he has.
Right now, the child is supposed to be in his crib falling asleep for his nap. Instead, he’s in there singing an ode to Max. It goes a little something like this:
“Maaaaaax. Maaaaaaaax! Max! Max! Mamadadamemenana....
Hooray!
Hooray, hurrah! Matt came home from Sundance last night, and Milo and I couldn’t be more excited. I was a little curious to see how Milo would react to his dad’s arrival. Matt was so busy from morning to night out there, so we only got to ichat one time all week and of course, Milo isn’t much for phone chatting at this point. I thought Milo might hang back a little, be a little...

I mean, I probably should definitely not make a burrito out of the chili I made for dinner last night, right? Because it’s 10pm. And I already ate the entire box of Annie’s mac n’cheese that I made for the kid’s dinner but he refused to touch after he’d eaten all the broccoli that I’d mixed in there out of it, plus the two very large doughnuts I ate tonight.

Sometimes I think it’s really weird that Milo doesn’t like to eat bread. Most of the time, it’s actually pretty annoying because it takes away a lot of quick meal options, like sandwiches. But sometimes, like when I’m sitting here eating a dulce de leche yeast doughnut from my favorite doughnut place (Dough, for those of you in Brooklyn), it’s actually pretty awesome...
The boy and I have both come down with winter colds, which I blame on taking him to the doctor’s for his well-baby visit on Friday. I’d put off that visit for 2 months, but now I wish I’d skipped it all together. I don’t see much need for well-baby visits past the 12 month mark, especially during winter’s cold/flu season. Sure enough, there were several sniveling...

It's a boy!
Matt and I went to my midwife’s office today for our 20 week ultrasound, aka the day you can find out (if the baby cooperates) the sex. The tech was talking us through all the steps she was doing. There are two techs in the office, but this one is my favorite because she’s so nice and always goes into detail about what she’s looking for and what she’s seeing. There’s...

The best day of Milo's life
In another instance of Matt hitting it out of the ballpark of awesomeness, he bought us tickets to the New York Botanical Garden’s Holiday Train Show, with an extra ticket to go see the sing-a-long performance with Thomas the Tank Engine. He completely and thoroughly blew Milo’s mind with this day.
Milo’s fascination with and love for trains continues unabated. Rare is the hour...

I’m not the type of person who makes New Year’s resolutions. I know myself too well to bother with this usually. This year, however, I do have a few things I’d like to put some effort into. One, of course, is to be a better parent to Milo, especially as we transition into a 2 kid family. Two, to be more engaged in the world around me. I need to learn to take some time to myself...

Remember, count your blessings.
Another great post from this lady. An excellent reminder to all of us who moan about driving a few hours or having to fly across country with a baby on our lap to visit out families and friends: we don’t even know how good we have it.

We’ve had our first cold snap of the winter over the past few days. Without any real motivating factors to get out of the house, the kid and I stayed in our pjs for the most part. The weather is supposed to warm back up to a more reasonable winter temperature tomorrow, and I’m stoked. Two days inside, and I’m going completely stir crazy.
Happily, my friends dropped off their son...

The holidays have come and gone. Despite all of my grumblings, I ended up having a perfectly lovely time, as always. The biggest treat was that Matt’s company shuts down between Xmas and New Year’s (gotta love the film industry), so we had him home with us for days on end (hence the lack of updates because if it comes to choosing between real life and blogging, I’m going to go...

This is the way I’d like to see more of us (those of us who are lucky enough to have plenty and aren’t hurting financially) doing our Christmas shopping.
Totally cried while reading this. It may be that my cold, cold heart thawed out just a smidge while reading.

Since I’m not the only one out there who has a hard time buying good gifts for people I care about, I thought I’d make a suggestion in case any of you were still looking for a great gift for any of the smart awesome ladies in your life who like to read. (I hope that is all of the ladies in your life. And, obviously, these aren’t just books for ladies—I’m sure that any smart...
Man, between my whole anti-Christmas screed and my Debbie Downer pregnancy, I’m a real joy to be around these days, huh?

16 weeks and counting
This pregnancy is so weird to me. It’s just so completely different from the first go-around that I have trouble wrapping my head around it. At 16 weeks, 3 days, I’ve gained exactly three pounds. I do not need to wear maternity clothes, although I’m finally starting to bump out a wee bit. At 16 weeks last time, I had gained 15 pounds and was so very definitely wearing maternity...

In which I detail one of the many ways that I am...
There are a few people in my Facebook feed who’ve done a daily countdown to Christmas since October. Some people may find this annoying, but I actually find it useful. I, too, am counting down, except I’m counting down the days until Christmas is over and I don’t have to hear or think about it again for another 340 days or so.
Matt put our little Christmas tree up last night...

The Top 10 Sandwich Additions of the Year in NYC →
Hey! Our pal Aaron is one of the three owner dudes. We even kicked in a little for their Kickstarter campaign a while back, so it’s nice to see that this place is really taking off. Maybe some day I’ll actually get away from the kid long enough to go eat here. Anyway, if you live in Brooklyn, go check it out.

Preschool Madness: It Begins
Even though it’s only early December, it turns out that we got a late start on the preschool application process. It’s not that we’re trying to get into some crazy Manhattan preschool that requires an interview and testing and costs like $28,000 a year (although we do have a few of those in Brooklyn, too…looking at you, St. Ann’s with your $24,000 a year tuition), but...

Pregnancy Update, 15 weeks
As of yesterday, I’m now in my 15th week. I don’t look very pregnant, and I don’t feel particularly pregnant either. To be honest, I don’t think very much about it at all right now. Matt was teasing me a few weeks ago when I spaced on my first nuchal ultrasound appointment and had to reschedule it, joking that I was really phoning this pregnancy in.
Don’t get me...
Nice face, kid.

Flashback Friday
Earlier this week, Kimbahanne mentioned that her daughter Indy had inadvertently touched grass for the first time. She said her Indy’s expression was priceless, although she didn’t get a photo of it because she was laughing too hard.
Reading that, I was reminded of Milo’s first experience with sitting on the grass. He was not impressed.
Just two buds hanging out, taking turns feeding each other from a doll’s bottle. You know, bro stuff.
bujnik replied to your post: Someone had a rough day, I guess.
Are those all vinyls?
lazydad replied to your post: Someone had a rough day, I guess.
If that’s a collection of vinyls behind the kid, it’s an amazing collection! Jealous!
Yep, those are records. When Matt and I met, we each had one of those Ikea shelves filled with records. When we moved in together and decided to integrate our...

Are you honestly that strict about nap-time?
Hahaha, no. I do, however, encourage him in every way possible to spend a full two and a half hours in his room during nap/quiet time. He usually naps for about two hours anyway, but if he only sleeps for 90 minutes one day, I’ll let him stay him in his...

He’s pretty into glam rock these days.
I love that he’s talking now, I really do. But I’m already sick of hearing “all done!” a hundred times a day. The child is supposed to taking a nap right now. Instead, he’s up and playing in his bed, periodically shouting “aw donn! awwwww donnnnn!!!!!”
No, you are not all done until I say you are all done. Just because you snoozed for 10 minutes in the...

The boy was in rare form when we got home from my midwife appointment this afternoon. When we were leaving the office, I had bribed him back into the stroller with some raisins, so maybe the sugar really pumped him up. I don’t know, but whatever was going on, it was like being at home with the Tasmanian Devil or something. Each time my eye was off of him, he made mischief.
While I was in...

Who said you could grow up so fast?
I was making conversation with another mom on Saturday at the park as her son and Milo were circling each other warily. She asked me how old he was. Eighteen months, I replied, not thinking much about it at the time. But now I am thinking about it—18 months! Holy cow! My kid is 18 months. A year and a half. You get so used to taking everything one day at a time when you have a baby that sometimes...

In years past, I used to host these massive wine-fuelled 20 person Thanksgiving dinners for friends. I would make 3 or 4 pies, fresh biscuits, a whole spread. Ah, the follies of youth.
When Matt asked me a few weeks ago if I thought we should cook on Thanksgiving, I was in the midst of pregnancy-related morning/afternoon/all day sickness and the thought of cooking or eating made me want to...

Nothing quite like getting woken up on a Sunday morning by your husband poking his bed in the bedroom and saying, “Honey, we have a real poop catastrophe in here. I’m gonna need your help. The boy and I are heading into the shower.”
I laid there for another minute, shaking myself out of my dream (I was about to learn how to snowboard!), debating for a split second about maybe...
Despite the newly chilly temperature outside, the sun is shining and it’s a beautiful day. Milo and I took a stroll up to our favorite playground this morning. I was sensibly decked out in a coat, gloves, hat and scarf. My son deigned to wear his winter coat, but refused all of my attempts to get a hat or mittens on him.
Every other child there had a hat and mittens on, or at the very...

I just spent the last three days making a fairly detailed spreadsheet of Brooklyn preschools. Sigh. My kid is only 18 months old, and I don’t plan on sending him to school until he’s three, and yet here I am, making spreadsheets. We’re going to our first open house tonight at the Brooklyn Waldorf School. If I have any Brooklyn readers who are interested in this info, send me your...

Someone I know asked me a while ago why I don’t post as often as I used to on here. I joked that my posting frequency has an inverse correlation to my kid’s increased mobility and vocalized desires. I’d probably post a lot more if I worked outside of the home because there’s always a few minutes of downtime during the office work day, but the only downtime I have at home...

The good news is that Milo has learned four new words in the past few days. The unfortunate news is that two of these four words are “boogah” and “poop”. It’s only a matter of time before the armpit fart noises and the poop jokes commence, isn’t it?
(Although if you could see him right now, leaning up against me on the couch, holding my hand and kissing my...
